This hip-hop flavored shoe boutique has its own subtitle: the Academy of Fine Art and
the Science of Sneakers, and true to its word, carries both sneakers and art. The boutique
opened at this spot in late 2007, and owner Tyranny Allen is a local celebrity having been
a member of the much-lauded Oakland hip-hop group Digital Underground. The boutique
offers limited edition and dead-stock sneakers that range up to $1,000 a pair (for a double
pack of limited edition Air Jordans in a gold box with an 18-karat gold tag). Also come by
for locally designed T-shirts by No Rival and Thug Boss and caps emblazoned with “ht”
for local brand Hella Tight, which every good Oaklander knows is a definite shout
out to the in-crowd.

HELLA TIGHT & The Case Of The Whities

There is no doubt confronting race makes people feel uncomfortable.
The WHITIES hat brings awareness to how people feel when their race or people

Meet The “Whities” By Hella Tight — Racism In The Cap
In the past years there’s been tensions between the Cleveland Indians organization and the National Coalition on racism in sport and media attacking the Washington Red Skins, Kansas City Chiefs, and Atlanta Braves, native -American’s found the mascots to be “personally offensive” and should not have been impermissible of them to use the mascots as the main face of their ball clubs, and not asking for permission, and unthoughtful. Most people did not feel it was it was offensive to their heritage, not knowing the full history and what it entails, and the racism native- Americans endured throughout history.

Is Hip-Hop Too Materialistic?
Local emcees offer an alternative to Patrón wishes and Maybach dreams
From the East Bay Express

Let’s face it: many rap songs celebrate, if not downright glorify, materialism. To signify
baller status, you’re encouraged to have a “Rollie” on your arm like Snoop Dogg,
“cashmere thoughts” like Jay-Z, and “mustard & mayonnaise” like E-40. Otherwise,
as Too $hort might say, you’s a “broke biatch.” This trend isn’t even a new one;
back in the old-school days, Grandmaster Melle Mel exclaimed, it’s all about the
money/ain’t a damn thing funny, Jimmy Spicer shouted out, “dollar bill, y’all,” and
Trouble Funk succinctly stated, “I need some money.”
